Promise: In under 3 minutes Overclock will be installed on your Mac — no commands, just click and drag.
Step 1 — Open the .dmg file
Go to your Downloads folder and double-click the file ending in .dmg.
Your Mac will think for a second and then open a small window with two icons: the Overclock icon (looks like an app icon) and a folder called Applications.
Step 2 — Drag the Overclock icon into the Applications folder
With your mouse, click and hold the Overclock icon. Without releasing the click, drag it until it's on top of the Applications folder. Then let go.
Your Mac will copy the program there. Depending on your computer, this takes 5 to 30 seconds.
Don't close the small window yet — wait for the "copied" message to appear, or for the progress bar to disappear.
Step 3 — Open Overclock
Now go to Launchpad (the rocket icon in your dock, or press F4 on your keyboard) and look for the Overclock icon. Click it.
Or, if you'd rather: open Finder → click Applications in the sidebar → look for Overclock → double-click it.
The Mac warning (Gatekeeper) — don't panic
The first time you open Overclock, your Mac may show a message like this:
"Overclock" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.
or
"Overclock" was blocked because it is not from an identified developer.
This is normal and expected. Mac does this with any program that didn't come straight from Apple's App Store. Overclock is safe and signed — it has the developer's digital certificate. The warning appears because Apple requires an extra registration process for programs distributed outside their official store.
How to fix it:
Option A (easiest):
- Close the warning by clicking OK or Cancel.
- Go to System Settings (the gear icon in the dock or in the Apple menu).
- Click Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down. You'll see a message saying Overclock was blocked.
- Click "Open Anyway".
- Your Mac will ask for your password (the same one you use to log in to your computer). Type it and confirm.
- Overclock will open.
Option B (quick way):
- In Finder, find the Overclock icon in Applications.
- Right-click it (or hold Ctrl and click).
- In the menu that appears, click "Open".
- A window will ask if you're sure — click "Open".
Why does this only happen once? After you authorize it, your Mac remembers that you trust the program and never asks again. It's the system's protection doing its job.
Step 4 — Confirm it opened
Overclock will show up on your screen. You can close the .dmg window now (click its red X).
This lesson's micro-win: Overclock is installed and open on your Mac. You got past the only moment of friction in the install (the system warning) and you're looking at the main screen.
Next step: Lesson 1.5 — Guided Mode.
